Ever since a high school english class I took on Enlightment, I have been extremely interested in the art of Alex Grey. On a conceptual level, his ability to communicate metaphysics and spirituality fascinates me: it is metaphysical, but it is also completely humanist and lacking dharma, where traditional religious art tends to allude to God and Church. On a visual level, his use of color to organize his seemingly chaotic imagery creates an incredible depth to a two dimensional image. Along the same lines, the relationships between subject, foreground, background, are blurred in a way that makes the image so complex and detailed, with symbolic imagery in even the furthest back corners, yet its complete beauty and feeling can be understood by a mere glance.
